Peter's Report
With something in the region of 150 walks a year, there are no new walks. That seems to be the accepted wisdom in the Carlisle Ramblers. Until today that is. No doubt we have been in the Barbon Fell area before, and Lauren and I can remember a lovely walk along the river, led by Graham, and finishing up, I believe, in Kirkby Lonsdale, last summer. However, today’s route took us along the foot of Barbon Fell and onto Brownthwaite Moss and back via a delightful, if, at times, somewhat splodgy route, along a long valley on the side of the delightfully named Hoggs Hill and back via Barbon Beck to an excellent little café at Barbon village. It was lovely to welcome four students whose names (apart from a young lady by the name of Alex) neither Lauren nor I managed to pick up. I do hope you are able to come again in spite of going home today with mud caked boots / wellies / trainers. Congratulations to Sandra for spotting the route, doing a very careful recce and leading it along a series of very complex footpaths that gave us beautiful views of Kirkby Lonsdale, the village of Casterton and the surrounding hills, and even, in the distance, some of the snow capped peaks of the Lake District. Lovely walk, amazingly the weather remained dry so thanks to Sandra for making it possible.
