A Walk
Swatte Fell
10 Miles Grade 1
Leader: Ken Halliday
Report & Photos by: Peter Flynn
“If anybody can find a dry way down, it will be hugs and kisses all round”. This was the promise / threat made by Ken as we were descending from the heights down to Moffatt, but fortunately for our sanity and wellbeing there was no hint of a dry way and we were spared his amorous machinations. The walk was one of those; not so much muddy – Ken always avoids anything muddy – but boggy and quite wet. However, and this is a big however, it was a lovely walk. We had forest walks, a very steep climb up to the summit, magnificent views for miles around and superbly accurate leading from Ken on a maze of paths. Nearly all of it was totally new to the rest of the group, and even Ken said that when he recced it, that was the first time in the area. We were very pleased to welcome Jane who has just moved to Carlisle and who clearly is a very accomplished walker. Now the big question – where was this summit? I did not take note of the name when we were there, but looking subsequently at the map I think it was Swatte Fell which is north of the town and is shown on the map as being a spacious, pretty flat plateau – big enough to land a jumbo jet, except it would get bogged down in the nasty bits There were 10 of us in total and I am pretty sure we all thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks Ken for a really interesting un-muddy and very scenic walk.
