4 of us set off from the Sands today, Roger, Lesley, Jane and me with the hope/ optimism the weather would improve, we met Ian and Christine at Greenhead and after placing our order for refreshments at the end of the walk we set off.

This was not a day for hanging around the weather for this walk could at best be called changeable with sporadic showers some even wintery.  After plodding through mud we arrived at Gilsland and this was were, after further recceing yesterday, diversions were called for which led to a bit more road walking than anticipated and shaved about a mile and half off the walk and on to the lunch stop beside the river below Gilsland Spa.
After lunch the last 'climb' of the day was tackled and it was on to more mud and over stiles and on to Greenhead, however due to the swift progress that had been made a short diversion was made to look at the ruins of Thirwell Castle.
Upon arrival back in Greenhead the refreshments were most welcome, thanks to all who came along.
