Walk & Event Reports

.

The weather was never forecast to be good but some of the conditions encountered were probably as bad as we could have got. We were slightly lucky on the Tuesday that there was no rain but it was very cloudy . The assent of Coniston Old Man was done in good time with an encounter of the the Fix the Fells teams on the way up, a handful of other souls seen during the course of the day. Lunch was taken at the top with the winds getting strong. We had to abort going along the ridge to Brim Fell as the winds were so strong you could hardly stand up. On the way down to Goats Hawes three of the group were blown off their feet with some bumps and bruises sustained. A bit more shelter was gained once we reached Goats Water and with the wind blowing up the spray on the tarn and the rapid cloud movement the scenery was spectacular. Everyone made it back to the cars happy with an adventurous day behind us.

Thursdays walk had different if equally challenging conditions as the heavy rain hit home. Again we topped out on the lower summit of Black Crag but the torrential rain made it every bit as challenging with regular route changes having to be made to avoid the flood waters. Heading on to Holme Fell we had to abort just shy of the summit. Everyone was soaked with the ground getting increasingly boggy. The walk back to the hotel was very eventful. Paths had become rivers and fields Lakes. Much of the rest of the walk was done in ankle deep to knee high water. Again spirits remained high with everyone keeping a sense of humour.

All in all two very challenging walks on what turned out to be a great few days away. Im sure they will be long remembered for various reasons. Thanks once again to Graham for all the organisation, a great job.
