12 of us set off on time to experience a walk combining spectacular landscape produce by river erosion and remains from the Roman Empire.

The sun was shining, the bluebells were in full bloom, and the breath-taking gorge was at its picturesque best.

Walking faster than a platoon of Roman Legionnaires and scaling the styles quicker than ripped roe deer we had time to take a short diversion. Crossing one of the most impressive suspension bridges in Cumbria we visited the small St Cuthbert’s Church at Nether Denton to see a genuine Roman alter aptly placed on the site of a former major fort.

During lunch at Banks Turret, we were able to admire the fabulous views over The Castle Carrock Hills and the Lakeland Fells.

At Lanercost we discussed who paid for the refurbishment of the Priory where Edward 1st resided for 6 months in 1306- ruling England from our remote northern frontier.

The final tiring wooded climb took us back to Low Row.

Thanks to everyone who turned out and endured my incessant commentary leaving slighter older and hopefully a little wiser!!
