A poor weather forecast for the day but in the end we managed a respectable 8 miles or so including a couple of Wainwrights. The worst of the weather came during the climb up to Great Dodd and instead of turning left we turned right and descended out of the clouds to take lunch on top of Calfhow Pike, a fine rocky little top overlooking St John’s in the Vale. From this point on the day improved and we enjoyed a steady climb onto Clough head with views over Thirlmere. We descended to the old coach road and waterproofs were discarded for the remaining couple of miles of easy walking back to the cars by which time the sun had appeared and summer had returned.
Thanks to the six walkers who defied the odds and enjoyed a great ramble
