A Walk

Grike to Lank Rigg

 Leader: Pete Rutland

Report & Photos by Pete Rutland

A bit of a drive all the way down to Ennerdale Bridge and the start of the walk across Blackeley Moss. Seven of us in total hit the summit of a cloudy Grike. There was no point in hanging about so it was across to Crag Fell. As expected a bit of a bog in places and the summit of Crag Fell was about the same as Grike. We were given glimpses of Ennerdale but again headed off in the direction of Whoap. This involved going down and up on the other side of the valley. Just prior to heading onto the summit of Whoap we had an early lunch in the shelter of a stone wall. From Whoap the views improved as the visibility got better. The vast areas of open countryside and rolling hills are very different to the higher fells not to far away up the Ennerdale valley but  they make this area seem very remote and people look very small.

Lank Rigg was the last hill of the day before taking a hillside path around the valley and then heading down for a couple of relatively flat miles back to the road and the cars. On route we past a gill named Stinking Gill, the challenge was then set to see if someone could find the origins of its name. There were no obvious clues in the air. Watch this space. A walk that for me, got better as the day progressed. I hope the rest of the group enjoyed the walk and thanks for coming a long. A visit to Moota for tea and cakes on the way back ended the day as it should.
