Bannerdale Crags and Bowscale Fell

Leader: Ian Rowley

Report: Ian Rowley

Photos: Astrid Carss and Pete Rutland

Full winter conditions made today's walk an interesting if at times challenging route.
We managed to avoid some of the bogs alongside the river Glenderamacken  but had to break trail through soft snow to get onto the high ground to start the ridge  route onto Bannerdale crags. Snow and ice kept us from getting too close the edge of the ridge and it was tough going at times but made easier and safer with the use of microspikes.
We made our way to the summit where we had lunch and built a snowman before heading  to Bowscale Fell. The leader came under heavy bombardment by snowballs but nevertheless guided everyone safely towards the tarn  with bumslides down to the path that eventually led us back into Mungrisdale.
A longer and tougher day than planned but everyone got round safely and in good spirit.
Thanks to all fifteen club walkers who made this a memorable day.
