13 of us and Clive the dog set off from the Sands to GIlsland on a cloudy dry and improving day weather wise -as the day continued we had weak winter sunshine and blue skies cool and windy in exposed areas but very warm in the sheltered woodland ,much different from yesterday's terrible weather and probably Mondays forth coming storm
We walked up to BIrdozwald and doubled back into the village taking the river path past the stepping stones ,this was going to be our return path but due to the high river they were completed submerged so we had to return via the road .Lunch was taken by the fast flowing river in the Irthing gorge and it was onward to the waterfall which due to the rain and high river was quite spectacular .The going underfoot today was quite tricky due to wet somewhat muddy and slippy conditions so care had to be taken the styles in particular were very slippy but everyone returned safely and we called in at Lanercost tea rooms for some very nice refreshments .Thanks to everyone who ventured out on a very pleasant January day
