Apparently some old dodderer who supplemented his local authority pittance by writing a few books about the Lake District, reckoned that today’s walk was the most beautiful in the whole area. For once I do think that Mr W. had a point. Not a great mountaineering expedition or the sort of challenge that Striding Edge or Sharp Edge or some of the more serious scrambles might provide, but a gentle, quite long, steady path along the eastern side of Ullswater. 11 of us started the walk by parking at Pooley Bridge and then catching the bus down to Glenridding. Here we picked up the trail – not at all obvious at the start, but after that it would be difficult to lose. The day was wonderful – sunny, warm (a bit chilly towards the end), slightly up and down and tremendous views across the lake. The party split 50 / 50 near the end with one group heading for the stone circle known as the Cockpit (we thought of doing a sacrifice to the deities who controlled Sunday Walk days, but no one seem to have the essential qualification to be the victim) and the other party went via the roadway, past Sharrow Bay, to the excellent tea shop where we all met up again, in Pooley Bridge. A lovely, relaxing walk, the sort one remembers for a long time. Many thanks to Heather for superb planning.
