A Walk: Souther Fell - Bowscale Tarn

8.5 Miles Grade 2

Leader: Andy Williamson

Report by Andy Williamson

A turn out of 5 people, myself included, for which I was grateful, (4 more than last time).

We set off from Mungrisedale on a cold fresh morning, and climbed briskly up Souther Fell. It may have got the blood racing but not the body temperature. Even before the top we were in cloud which turns out was pretty much the story of the day. All the fantastic views that I had got on Friday were just a blur.

We dropped all the way down to the foot of White Horse Bent only to have to regain the height again with interest, as ascended Bannerdale Crags. Bitterly  cold we did not linger and continued on to Bowscale Fell where we had lunch in the shelter having completed all the days climbing. I use the term shelter very loosely. It was positively freezing.

A short lunch break taken we descended to Bowscale Tarn where we had finally emerged out of the clouds. A pleasant stroll down a good track to the tiny Hamlet of Bowscale and then along the road back to Mungrisdale and the cars. Here we enjoyed the warmth of the Mill Inn Pub where we all took refreshments, and Peter Flynn a Sunday roast dinner.

Thanks to all who came along.
