Another good turn out for a car walk Sunday with 15 walkers opting for an enjoyable day with weather that turned out to be better than the forecast. Starting with a short stretch of the river South Tyne crossed by a narrow footbridge in the shadow of the magnificent Lambley Viaduct. Climbing out of Lambley village we picked up the Pennine Way with some wet conditions underfoot but generally good going over broad moorland with extensive views over the South Tyne valley.  After a short coffee stop next to the Scottish sounding Glendue Burn we left the Pennine Way and had lunch in the peaceful surroundings of St Judes churchyard, Knaresdale.

The rest of the walk followed the disused railway line back towards our starting point eventually reaching the viaduct where we spent time admiring the skill of Victorian engineers and the marvellous views in all directions. A fine day with the bonus of good weather, beautiful North Pennine scenery and great company.

Footnote.

In the graveyard of St Judes I noticed a headstone with the name Fred Alex Wills, died April 19th 1961 and the single word epitaph “vagabond”. Searching the internet it turns out he was a wrote for the Newcastle Evening Chronicle and published numerous walking guides for the area in the 1930’s using the pen name “vagabond”.
