Shakespeare had a wonderful way with storms and hurricanes and so on: pity he did not last till this walk, he would have had enough material for another of those massive books that everyone has, gathering dust on a shelf in the best room, but rarely reads. (Present readers excepted, of course.) We welcomed Sharon for her first A walk; with storm force winds, heavy rain, thick mist and no views as well as being treacherous underfoot, she must have thought – “what fun” or “this is the life for me”. This was Bruce’s first walk as the walk leader and I think everyone must agree, in circumstances like this he was great, making sure despite the low visibility that the group stayed together and negotiated the crags and bogs safely. Despite all this, in fact we all enjoyed the walk. To talk of it being a challenge is an understatement. Every step had to be carefully executed and most of us went down at one stage or another, mostly slipping on the waterlogged turf. We eventually made it back to Ambleside for very welcome refreshments. Thanks Bruce for excellent walk leading and do join us again, Sharon. Plenty more where this came from.
