Report & Photos by John Mckay

Five of us set off from the Sands for Bonnie Scotland. I love walking in Scotland,

It’s much more advanced than England (most things are) you have the “Right to Roam”. What sensible people the Scots are. No need to bother about little green lines on the map (right of way). You can walk where you want, my style of walking. Come to think of it and as many of you will know and as some have pointed out, I don’t take any notice of those little green lines when I’m walking in England. Fiona, Julie and Drew, new to the club, were in for a treat, Phil, an old hand, probably knew what to expect. We set off along a lovely forest path but before long we delved into the dense forest. It was nowhere near as muddy as I expected (or hoped) and we soon found ourselves on open ground. The weather was nice, warm and dry, and visibility was good as we made our way to the summit but as we reached the final little climb it started to rain and the summit vanished in thick mist. We sat in the shelter of a wall and had lunch and thankfully, while we ate, the rain stopped and the mist lifted, we were able to go to the summit and enjoy some good views. It was then downhill and some rough fell before we headed back into the forest and picked up the path back to the car. There were no cafes open in Langholm and we ended up in a garden centre near Longtown for refreshment, very good it was too, I would thoroughly recommend the lemon meringue pie. Thanks to all who came along, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did
