Greenhead Circular

13 of us (plus one dog) set off from outside the café in Greenhead, which was closed all day, which didn't bode well for the end of walk but luckily the Greenhead Hotel came to our rescue 🙂
Once on the Hadrians Wall path progress was made to Gilsland and Poltross Burn after a quick stop to look round the remains it was time to tackle the first challenge of the day the track upto Birdoswald were a coffee break was had in the courtyard, at this point some people were mentioning GPS monitors already saying they had walked 5-6 miles, which the walk leader blamed on incorrect GPS readings/ satellite alignments/ calibrations for the readings.
After the break it was time for the mundane part of the walk the road walk to Gilsland Spa which led to some investigating the Sulphur Spring while some went to investigate the swimming pool while the rest of us took chance to chill out by the river, after our brief stop it was time for the final hill of the day and a delightful walk through the woods back to the road and to pick up the path back towards Greenhead.
On the way back a stop was made to offer the group a choice another slight detour to Thirwell Castle, which would add qtr of a mile to the walk, with the vast majority plumping for a walk straight back to Greenhead which we did and arrived back to the pub and suitable refreshments, at this point the final mileage was between 10 and 11 miles depending on which GPS reading you believed.
Thanks to all who came along
Stephen
