Hands up all who have heard of Haweswater. Everyone, excellent. Now, those who have heard of Gatesgarth Pass. Most of you. Good. Galeforth Gill? Nobody!! Tarn Crag? 1 person. Poor! Grey Crag – no, not that one, the one in Sleddale. 2 people? Mmmm. Harrop Pike? 1 person! Not going to win Brain of Britain are we? One person did know all of these and led the walk very competently from rocks to bogs, some of them quite deep and mushy. That person was Roger. The walk was along the rather damp, grassy fells in the Sleddale area. This is normally approached from the south, but this time for a change, Roger led us over Gatesgarth, down the hill and up into the hills to the east of the path. While the paths were pretty well non-existent, and the bogs plentiful, the views were absolutely stunning. We could see all the main Yorkshire hills, Pendle Hill far down to the south, Morecambe Bay, the Duddon Estuary, Blackpool Tower and the Isle of Man (just) plus virtually all the mountains of the new World Heritage Site (a.k.a. the Lake District). A lovely walk, only 5 of us on it, very different from normal and well worth it for the views alone. The weather was lovely most of the time, a bit of rain in the late afternoon, but nothing to write home about. We finished in the Haweswater Hotel with tea and cakes. Thanks very much Roger for an excellent walk.
