The sun shone on eighteen B walkers and two canine companions. Visiting Scarness bay there was no sign of hunting Ospreys but there was a large outdoor camp with what looked like enthusiastic youngsters heading out on to the waters of Bassenthwaite in canoes and on paddleboards. A break was taken at the pretty St Bega’s church close by the shore of the lake and we then made for Dodd Wood and the nesting Ospreys. Along the way we learned that Ospreys migrate to West Africa, they fly at around 40 kmh and an Ospreys nest is MUCH bigger than you would think.
The helpful RSPB volunteers pointed out the male and female birds although they are only visible through powerful telescopes. Lunch was taken at the second, higher viewpoint then the walk headed for the top of Dodd fell, at 1600ft a great viewpoint. Tea was taken in the excellent Saw Mill tea-room back at Dodd wood car park.
Thanks to everyone who came along
