A Walk Report

Six set off and six returned – always a relief for a leader (and especially when some of the party had sampled the  lovely, cold, campylobacter-enriched water of Whita Well!).  It remained cloudy all day, but fortunately cloud level was high enough to allow us the promised views of the Muckle Toon from both east and west.  Underfoot conditions varied from excellent to...less than excellent.

Many thanks to all of you for not complaining (at least in my hearing) despite the walk's turning out to be a wee bit longer than advertised but NOT 12 miles!

C Walk Report

Fourteen of us left the Kilngreen and headed to Potholm and then on to the lower slopes of Meikleholm, where we lunched.  The views of Castle Hill and Whita from here were a new experience even for some of those who had walked previously in the Langholm area.  Many thanks to the group for making my leader's job so easy, to Myna for the photos and to the Eskdale Hotel for the most welcome post-walk refreshments.

B Walk Report

16 walkers set off up the track to the summit of Whita Hill. We enjoyed a brief rest at the top while admiring the work of the builders of the 1830s who erected the monument to Sir John Malcolm. Then it was downhill to view the bronze open book memorial to the poet Hugh MacDiarmid before walking down the Newcastleton road. We then turned right onto serious mud created by machines in connection with the improvements to the electricity pylons. Luckily we didn’t lose anyone and carried on to the lunch stop looking down on the road north to Hawick and beyond. Then it was down to the High Mill Bridge and up to the lower slopes of the Castle Hill and the numerous pheasants enjoying their brief lives. We returned to Langholm by the woods and the Duchess Bridge before enjoying the delights of the Eskdale Hotel. I apologise for the slight delay over refreshments but the scones were lovely. Thanks to all who came and a warm welcome to the four newcomers.
