Pete's Report

The walk kicked off from Brown Ring Farm below Great Mell Fell. Ten of us set out across country which eventually took us to a point where we had a quick detour up Little Mell Fell. The weather being great, which it was all day, we had some smashing  views around the area.

It was then on to the long track which goes through Swinburn Park. A lot of the time in the woods with occasional views through to Ullswater. Then out through Kirsty Brow to take up the path onto Gowbarrow. On the summit we had lunch with marvellous views all around. Was nice and sunny and just about warm enough for the daft people in shorts.

It was then down and around the back of Gowbarrow where Neil again showed his great knowledge of some of the intricate paths and routes that many have trod and long since forgotten. So it was back to the cars and off to Cocklakes for tea and buns. Here the Stanwix Strollers soundly beat the Hillwalking Allcomers in a true battle of knowledge that compared with University Challenge.

Great Crack, great company, great weather and Great Leading by Neil, the sort of walk Sundays are made for.

Pete.

Heather's Report

With fabulous weather, a route with little known paths, two summits and ten well-matched walkers,

we couldn’t fail to have a great day.  We started out from the little lane under Great Mell,

crossed some fields, round and under Little Mell – where most of us struck out for the top since it was there,

although unscheduled.  Another fifty minutes along the lovely path through Swinburn Park brought us

to the top of Gowbarrow where we ate our lunch.  We descended and took the path to Ulcat Row,

passing Matterdale End with a little bit of road walking, more mud and paths till arriving back at the cars.

We had a cup of tea and cake in Cocklakes. Thank you Neil for a really lovely route.
