Driving up to Sandyhills with torrential rain battering the bus it looked like weather for the day was going to be as predicted.
Donning waterproofs 26 B Walkers set off across Sandyhills Beach and up onto Torrs Hill -overtaking the brave C walkers who were tackling the same route. Fortunately within minutes the heavy rain ceased and visibility improved allowing magnificent views along this amazing coast line. The incoming tide made a small detour into an old smuggling bay at Port o’Warren quite spectacular. Continuing along the cliffs the resilient cormorant colony were spotted at Cow’s Snout .The narrow cliff paths were made even more precarious due to mud under foot and strong gusts of wind.
We headed to Rockliffe for lunch and due to lack of sunshine all the seats in the bay were unoccupied – but fortunately the Ice-Cream van was still on site providing Mr Whippy cones!!!
This was very much a walk of 2 halves with the afternoon session taking us through the forests and the last clear view points of the day over the Rough Firth and the Almorness Peninsula ( see Walk Programme 4th August)
We headed back to Kippford and enjoyed drinks and cakes al fresco
From the Ark café.
( I’m not going to say how the C walkers beat us back !!!)
Thank you to everyone who turned out on a day predicted to be a wash out- but ended in sunshine,
CAROL
