B Walk
Deadwater Fell
Leader: Stephen Parker
Report & Photos by John McKay
After reading the report of the A walk, the B walk was very different. A bit of a chilly wind but lovely and sunny, great visibility and not a drop of rain. We had some lovely views, the autumn colours were quite stunning. Eight of us started the walk in a very civilised way by having a light breakfast at Kielder Castle before setting off through the forest and up the fells to the shelter at the summit of Deadwater. The sign boasts that the shelter was “architect designed”, whenever I see or hear those words I fear the worst and sure enough I was right to fear the worst. Lunch didn’t last long as an arctic wind blew directly into the shelter so we didn’t hang about, architects, who needs them. We made our way down and along the way we were informed by Carol that the best dressed male walkers should wear their trousers at “half mast” as that was now the fashion (see photo) Somehow I don’t think it will catch on, I for one will carry on being unfashionable. We arrived back at the castle and visited the café for a second time.
A lovely day and a lovely walk. Many thanks to Stephen for leading and to everyone else for their company.
