Seven of us drove to Dufton including a potential new member and met an eighth there.
We left behind calm, dry and dull weather in Carlisle, but in Dufton it was brighter and dry but the Helm wind was blowing strongly. We set off on a good track which became very muddy in places and contoured clockwise around the base of Dufton fell. We had intended to climb and traverse the top of the fell from the far side but when we reached the start of the path to the summit, It became clear that it would be very unpleasant and dangerous on the top so we stayed low and continued around the bottom of the fell. After a few hundred yards the sun appeared and the wind dropped so lunch was taken. Continuing after lunch, the wind reappeared as strong as ever and we walked on good paths to Dufton and the cars. Tea and cake at The Pot Place concluded the afternoon. Thanks to all for coming along.
