Report & Photos by Heather Perrin
On a gorgeous day, seven of us walked up from Roehead, past the Cockpit and past three, four or even five cairns together with many photo stops before attaining the Beacon on Arthur’s Pike where we stopped to have a pre-lunch lunch with unbeatable views (the last views before Loadpot, it must be said). Having warned about the cross-moor tramp inland to come, we set off from the real Arthur’s Pike’s summit a few metres away. Then the hard work and a bit of checking (thanks, Ian) till we finally hit the High Street Path just before Lambert Lad (a boundary stone not a Victorian urchin) and skirted round the back of Loadpot Hill, ignoring the inviting path upwards to our left. Upwards and round the back until, with the remains of Lowther House Chimney on our right, we struck off to the left and within a hop, skip and a jump were at the trig point at the top of Loadpot Hill. Loadpot, at 672 metres, is not a great hill in terms of excitement. But with lovely sunny weather it makes a satisfying trio if Bonscale Pike (maybe another time) is included.
Stopping for lunch on a grassy bank, we then made excellent time coming down on the High Street path, had merry fun trying to park in Pooley Bridge and ordered various cakes at Granny Dowbekin’s, the most notable being a most remarkable and exquisite fruit cake.
Many thanks to all who came to enjoy the day.
