The Caldbeck fells are not everyone’s cup of tea and the prospect of a walk into this quieter corner of the Lake District drew only four walkers. First impressions of the walk were not promising with low cloud and a surprisingly cool wind making the surrounding fells feel bleak and austere. An ascent, first of Longlands fell then Little Sca Fell, was made under these gloomy conditions although the four walkers were optimistic that the promised “brighter later” forecast would come to pass. And almost as soon as lunch was finished the clouds did roll back and the fine upland scenery was revealed. A further up-and- down over great Sca Fell then Meal Fell finally drew us to the quirky mountain pass in miniature of Trusmadoor. The u-shaped curve of the adjacent fells perfectly framing distant views of Criffell floating above the Solway.
A fine descent now bathed in warn sunshine led us down to Chapelhouse Reservoir which gave an interesting view of Skiddaw. Some field paths and a spot of cow wrangling eventually led us back to the village of Ulldale and the excellent Mae's Tea room. Situated in a former village school this tea room and gallery I would say is well worth seeking out.
A fine end to a fine day. Thanks to Neil for leading the walk.
