Eighteen members turned out for a figure-of-eight walk that started in the wide main street at Irthington, where parking was easy. There was an immediate problem with a kissing gate obstructed by greenery and so small that rucsacs had to be taken off to get through. After that the going was mainly straightforward and not too muddy in spite of the overnight rain that fortunately did not return until well after the walk was over. In fact it was sunny for a lot of the time. Two uphill stretches took us to Newtown where we turned west along the Hadrian’s Wall path and then northwest along the old corpse road to a coffee stop in Laversdale. On the next leg of the walk to Highfieldmoor Farm, those of you who did a variation of this walk in January 2018 will remember the precarious crossing of a ditch by a narrow plank with only a loose barbed wire handrail to hang on to. All managed it safely. Then it was east along the Wall path with a following wind and a stop for lunch before turning southeast on another section of the same corpse road back to Irthington. The scones at The Sally, straight out of the oven, were delicious.
