12 met at Bardon Mill today. I was pleased to see Ann and Ken because then I knew my Back was covered. Thanks Mate.
This really is an interesting walk stuffed full of history. We paused at the lovely hamlet of Beltingham where I read out a “Did you know” from Walk 16 of the Haltwhistle Rings. Got a wee cheer from Ken when I got to the bit about all the surrounding land ended up in the hands of a junior branch of the Ancient Scottish line! What a brave man, considering we were well south of the Border !
We reached the Peel, had a pause to regain our breath and then descended again, stopping for lunch at the bottom of the climb. We then retraced our steps to Plankey Mill.
Another stiffish climb through woodland, then across open farmland with spectacular views north to Hadrian's Wall before arriving back to the cars. A great cup of tea and cakes at The Post Office at Bardon Mill was most welcome.
Thank you all for making the day. See you all again in August when I come back (maybe) from Australia.
