Place Fell
7.5 Miles Grade 2
Leader: Peter Milburn
Report & Photos by Peter Miburn
After a brief delay for “the missing gaiters” 20 of us set out from Old Martindale Church along the road towards The Nab, including a new but experienced walker called Andrew Warboys.
At Dale Head we started the first ascent of the day up to Beda Fell Knott, spotting quite a number of deer on the fell side above us.
We had a brief banana/coffee break at the top before, unfortunately, having to lose some of the height we had just gained by heading down hill to Boredale Hause.
The serious effort started here as we began the climb up towards Place Fell. Eventually everyone made it and we sat down for a well earned lunch at Round How, surprisingly it didn’t seem as cold as it can be up there.
After lunch we continued to Place Fell summit cairn, and then headed downhill towards High Dodd before turning left and following the path to Sandwick Bay. We then had a mile or so to do along the road back to the cars.
The only snag was that on arriving at Howtown Hotel cafe for coffee and cake we found it to be closed. When we recce’d the walk in October they told us it was open until 4:30pm, but failed to tell us the whole hotel shut for the winter from November to March.
Fortunately Granny Dowbekins in Pooley Bridge saved the day by letting us in as they were about to close.
The weather was good and thanks to all for turning up and making it a good day out.
