Thirteen walkers joined me on a dampish Langholm morning. We set off up Whita Hill into the mist. Luckily the mist kept moving and the weather was kind at the top where we were able to admire the monument to Sir John Malcolm and read about his life. We followed the path to the open book memorial to the poet, Hugh McDiarmid and pondered on the meaning of some of the images. Sadly I had left a booklet all about it at home! We then followed the single track road down the hill then took a right turn to descend towards Far Whitshiels Cleuch having lunch at a suitable “bench”. We found plenty of mud on the Baggra track and towards Holmhead. We admired the neat piles of timber cleared from Storm Arwen and also noted fallen trees on the other side of the River Esk before reaching the Buccleuch Centre for welcome refreshments. Thanks to all for being such a cheerful group.

PS: Thanks to Judith for bringing delicious ginger cake to share on her birthday and it was lovely to see the massed snowdrops at Holmhead.
