Steel Fell to Helm Crag
8 Miles Grade 2
Leader: Pete Rutland
Report & Photos by Pete Rutland
Nine of us left the cars near Grasmere and headed to Helmside and the tracks taking us up Steel Fell. A very still and clear January morning meant we were soon stripping off layers in the gradually warming sun. Steel Fell, a hill often missed out offers views that extend from the Langdales and Coniston around to the Helvellyn range and beyond, a brilliant view point.
A quick cuppa on the summit then off toward Calf Crag. The usual boggy areas were mostly frozen and it was soon lunch on Calf Crag taking in the spectacular views. Onto Gibson Knott and a New Years Ginger wine toast then Helm Crag.
The weather and views were outstanding all day but not a sign of any jets, guess they are still on holiday. Thanks to all who came along, many more walks in these conditions will do just fine.
