Hadrian's Wall - Laversdale

 7 Miles Grade 3

Leaders: Chris & Helen Tyson

Report & Photos Chris Tyson

With a poor weather forecast in the wake of Storm Eleanor and predictably wet going underfoot, the walk was in doubt to the last minute.  It then very nearly didn’t take place for an entirely different reason.  Three, including the leader, turned up early at the Sands and sat in the car.  When no one else had apparently come by 9.20am they started the engine and were about to go home.  There was then a tap on the window from a member who had finally thought she recognised the car and announced there were six of them who had arrived unseen from behind and were standing in the blind spot of those in the car.  So eight members and a potential new member set off.  Yes, it was wet and muddy in places with evidence of storm damage, but there was no rain until a light shower 10 minutes from the end of the walk and, indeed, there was quite a lot of blue sky and a good spell of sunshine.

From the start near Crosby-on-Eden the party followed the Hadrian’s Wall path north and then east for about three miles.  Turning off to the northwest, Laversdale was soon reached and lunch was taken on the small village green, on the edge of which snowdrops were just appearing.  From there the footpath shown on the map but with little sign of it on the ground, was followed by way of an interesting ditch crossing to Highfieldmoor Farm and back to the start.  There was a general feeling of satisfaction at having turned out for the walk and tea was then taken in the comfortable surroundings of Eden Golf Club.
